Hiya,

I'm planning a move from surbiton to highbury in the next week or so, and am really struggling to find a removal company.

They're all either ridiculously expensive or really dodgy looking!!

Can anyone recommend someone they have used who is reliable and reasonable?!

I'm moving from a studio and have very little large furniture, so would only need a small van.

Cheers
Fizz

I am suprised you are finding it hard to find a company to move you with the housing market as it is at the moment.

My OH has a Removal business (up North so no good to you I'm afraid!)
and things on the domestic removal side are fairly quite at present.
The rocketing fuel prices are putting pressure on all haulage services, but the slow down in the market has meant raising costs is not really an option.

In terms of choosing the right company for you, word of mouth is really the best way of finding a good company.

If you don''t have anyone who can recommend someone your other option is to ask a few different companies to look round and give you a quote.

Think about what services you really need. There is no point paying for things you don't actually need.

Also, don't just assume that the bigger the company the better the service as this is not always the case.

There are several large well known companies out there who employ casual staff who basically don't give a toss how they treat your stuff.

My OH carries out all of the removals he books in himself, so it is his reputation on the line.

Asks the person giving the quote who will be carrying out the job.

Think about any features of your home which may present a problem (extra large sofa, fridge, narrow stairwell, lots of stairs) and ask the compay how they intend to deal with it and whether any extra costs are involved.

Ask if they price by the job or the hour (if it is by the job, do they charge waiting time if there are hold ups).
If it is by the hour, is there a minimum number of hours they charge.
Are they V.A.T registered in which case there may be V.A.T on top.

To give you an idea of pricing, most smaller companies in our area (businesses with a couple of 3.5 tonne vehicles) charge between £45 and £50 an hour.

If you have any other queries, I will try and help.
