stringing a washing line

apologies if this seems like a strange post, I have been googling it and found nothing!!
I moved in Nov from a house with a whirly washing line to a tenement with the old fashioned 4 washing poles and line which- goes -round -all- poles- in -a- square- then- crosses- over- in- the- middle- arrangement. I went down today to hang out washing for the first time (no-one else bothers, they all have driers) and the (evidently very)old cord just snapped on me. So tomorrow I shall go to the instore and buy a length of plastic line.
now, never had to do this before. is there a method for stringing the line so you only go between each set of posts once? I've been trying to work it out all evening with scraps of paper, but thought in the end to ask those who might know (though quite how it can be explained is beyond me..maybe a link?!!!)
I'm also happy as I finally found my log in info having lost it for a year..no longer can I just read, but also post, yeay!!!
anyway, any help/advice would be appreciated. I'm longing to get my washing outside again.
many thanks!!

Polyprop (spelling?) nylon rope is better. Toady. Plastic will break in time.
I would go round the square, then across once and then a seperate piece for the other diagonal.0
