Is there any legitimate places to win money/prizes by submitting short stories or poems?

  • Yeah. https://www.!!!!!!

Helium is great for freelance writing. You can submit articles and get paid for them but there's also competitions in the marketplace. That's where the real cash is. =]

    Have a good time!

Thanks...Ill have a look at that!
  • I should warn you though. The submission forms for articles are a little dodgy so I'd type it up in MS Word or something similar and copy-paste it so you have a saved copy in case there are problems.

Thanks SOF, this site looks interesting. I saw minimum payout is $25, how much do
they pay per article? I've looked around the site and just can't find it.
Being nosey  how much do you make at this?

    :)
  • Totally honestly, nothing yet!

I spend all my time earning a decent amount using sites like Squidoo, Writers:Share (now it's up and running again) etc. etc. and an acquaintance of mine recommended it. He's a steward on the site (Richard Leigh) and he makes a solid living using that site and many others.

I decided to join up and I like it. I've submitted 2 articles in as many days.

A couple of tips; the more articles on the topic, the harder it is to do well but the more chance of your article being viewed meaning more cash.

Also, I spend a fair amount of time each day on forums and social networking sites. If people go to your articles you get paid more. I don't know exactly how they decide your earnings but whilst this isn't an automatic money maker (nothing ever is!) you can make a decent amount with it.

I've got a blog and I'm going to chart my progress but I'm not sure if I can post a link on here =/

P.S. Ironically, I don't follow my own advice as I haven't entered any marketplace competitions yet. I prefer to stick to what I know and my topics just haven't cropped up lately.
  • I've looked into this a bit and I've found that just submitting an article gives a pretty poor return but you can make very good cash by entering channel contests and marketplace competitions.

I'm going to enter some channel contests tonight and when the results come in I'll post on here to say how it went and how much I earned (or not) just as an experiment.

    Until then... adios!
