Hi I'm a noobie, so forgive me if this has been asked before!
I want to make some money working from home, and I wondered if anyone knew of any Proofreading jobs going that can be done at home? I googled it, but just got lots of those sites selling proofreading courses, and a couple of places where they're not hiring at the mo.
Can anyone help?

You can post abou yourself and reply to people looking for proof readers on sites like elance.com or rentacoder.com.0

You will have very little chance of getting proofreading jobs without either training or experience - it's a very competitive industry. Look at the SfEP site (https://www.sfep.org.uk) for further info. There's also a related Facebook group, the Unofficial SfEP. I can't work out how to post a link to that, but presumably you can do a search for that group.0

try odesk. its a freelancing site so you just take projects as you need or have time for them. They pay in $ but paypal convert it for you and you can set your own hourly rates as to what you are willing to work for.Erika0

I've almost completed a Chapterhouse proofreading & copy-editing course, and so will be in the same boat soon. If you have skills from previous jobs that could be considered a niche, you could look for publishers who specialise in that subject (for me, science).
Then there's also the pebbledash approach. Get hold of a copy of the 'The Writer's Handbook' or 'Writers' and Artists' Yearbook' (up-to-date of course) and write to publishers offering your services, and offering to do a 'test piece' for them.
As Brownfrog said, though, I expect to find this area extremely competitive, which is why I'm looking for an edge, such as only looking for scientific (university level) proofreading. I may also add an indexing course to my skills, as I think indexers are particularly sought after.
Oh, the other thing would be to 'go local'. Perhaps a local printers could do a deal with you where they offer their customers a proofreading service for a fee, and you get work that way. Worth trying!______________________________Darth Traderusing the Force of Compoundingsince a long time ago...0 -
Darth Trader - how have you found the chapterhouse course? I am considering doing it but would like a second opinion before parting with my cash! Any info would be much appreciated!0

These courses are not rated very highly within the industry - if you're going to go for one, you're better off going for the SfEP, Publishing Training Centre, or courses run by the London College of Communications or Oxford Brookes Uni.0
