Cheap Bike

I'm not sure this is the right place to put this query but here it is,
I've decided to do something about my couch potato'ness. Obviously it's fitness on a shoe string (no pun intended!)
I have started running as apart from a pair of training, it doesn't cost anything apart from calories and I've got a surplus of those stored in the tyres I carry around my tummy.
Now I want a bike I could use to go to work. This means I'll get 2 benefits in 1 ride. I'll burn my fat rather than petrol. All good.
For my new plan, I need a cheap bike. I have looked at the local adds and there's nothing, same with freecycle.
I have trawled around the internet but to no avail...
Does anyone know of any cheap offers going?
I remember seeing adverts for 2 bikes for £100 in the paper some time ago. That would be perfect as a friend of mine is also looking for a bike.
Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

The offer is now £149 from these people

Tesco have had a bike in their stores for £40(ish) about 2 weeks ago. We usually look at Halfords and ToysRus for low cost bikes.
You could try putting a Wanted post on Freecycle - I cringe to put up popular items, because I get inundated with emails, but am quite happy to respond to a Wanted item.0 -

You will have a very sore bum for a week, after that it will be great fun. Get a bike with gears and mud guards. Most important get a Hi-Vis waist coat!I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.0 -
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.0

Consider the cycle to work Government incentive (link)
Basically your work 'buys'the bike (VAT free) then you 'hire' it for 12/18 months and pay for it out of your gross salary. Than at the end of the 'lease' you buy the bike off your company for a nominal sum. I did this last summer and got a nice bike that cost £450, but is costing me almost half that price!.....0 -
Something to look forward to! Can't wait for my pain n the bumBrian_Bullocks wrote: »You will have a very sore bum for a week

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm going to do some investigating.
I quite like the sound of the cycle to work scheme. I need to have a proper read of it.
I will take myself to Tesco's to. £40 sounds really good.
Cheers again for your replies.0
