Dealing with 40k debt

Thought it was about time that I confronted my credit card debts. Can't believe that I owe that much. Was dealing with it ok until son became ill and concentrated more on him that my debts. Missed payments etc and have gone from an excellent credit score to very poor. Own fault, should never have got into this much debt in the first place. Went to Payplan but they wouldn't help said it was bad management and that I had enough money to cope with bills and found the woman rather rude and very offputting. Left it for another year and now in a real mess. Phone the debt helpline as I have just received a court notice for a debt with co-op bank 9k. I despair, how could I have been so stupid. TSB are charging me the same interest as my payments so will never ever ever repay that debt of 8k, in fact it is going up each month not down. I seem to waste so much money. Thankfully, my mortgage is up to date and not in arrears, but now I cannot get any loans or balance transfers. It has now come to the stage where I can't afford to repay my debts I only bring home £1500 a month and with four children to care four (one ill) I am starting to despair. Have found reading this forum helpful so thought I would join. Everyone is trying so hard to pay off their debts it has made me believe that I can do it too. KittyL

Welcome to the DFW. You have come to the right place for some help.

Could you post an Soa (incomings and outgoings, list your debts too) it would help us to help you.

You could read the CCCS website http://www.cccs.co.uk/, a debt charity, they be able to help you.

Hi Kitty, well done for posting. I'm sorry you had an offputting experience with Payplan. Merlot's link is a good one to follow, as you can fill out forms online and arrange to have to telephone appointment later. You can also check www.entitledto.com to make sure you are getting any benefits that you are entitled to.
So sorry to hear one of your children is ill; no wonder you took your eye off the ball and got into worse money difficulties.
I would really recommend that you post up a detailed budget as per
    http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html
It's scary to write it all down but the exercise of finding out all the information can be quite positive; at least you know exactly what the problem is, and then you can start to sort it.
You will get loads of non-judgemental advice and support from the experts here.
    Keep posting! :)

Just to say that you are not alone. And you have my sympathies ref ill children. I would be totally uninterested in money if either of my children were ill too.

When you have time fill in the soa as per the link in the post above, so that we can spot any areas for saving.

Ref the ill child, do you get DLA for them, plus carers allowance?

    regards

    Hi Kitty

You will get this sorted honest. I know it doesn't feel like it. But people here are amazing with advice.

I wonder if you could ring your creditors and get them to freeze interest etc, perhaps with the Statment of affairs thing ( i'll find the link in a sec ) you could work out what you could pay each one each month? if you don't want to ring them, write to them instead?

I think maybe try the Citizen advice bureau? and do check out the benefits malarky. hmmm do you e bay - at least you would feel like you were doing something to move forwards? mind you I find it very time consuming and annoying at times!!

Hope your little boy is doing ok? do you think your Doctor could write a letter explaing the situation? and maybe send that to your creditors - anyone would that help??

just post lots here and all the experienced people will give you solutions

    take care hon

Just realised Merlot posted the link I was thinking of.

    Hi,

Just the same as all above. You are not on your own and there are so many lovely people here that will offer you fantastic support and advice along the way.

First things first though, post a full SOA when you can as it's amazing what others pick up that you don't and the advice and ideas are great!

Good luck and take care x

    Hi,

Nothing to add to the excellent advice given above...some councillors are better than others but the peopl on here are awesome.

Keep coming here - especially when you feel it's all a bit too much or you need advice from someone who's been there and faced the demons you face.
