Might be a good idea to give us a region in which you'd like to do the jump before we can really help.
As a rough guide, it is about £150-200 for a solo jump and £200-250 for a tandem jump.

Have a look on here and contact your nearest airfield direct:
    http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzone.htm
The direct prices will be a lot cheaper than using experiences companies like Red Letter Days.

What does he want to do?

I did a tandem from 10,000 feet. You only need a short lesson for that one, and then you're off with the instructor to do your jump. The instructor does everything and you just enjoy it!

He could also go a static line jump. He'll be solo jumping from around 3000 feet. Training is a lot more intense for that one. It was an all day course with a jump late afternoon when I did it. You're in control of the parachute, so you need to know everything before they let you jump.

The tandem was good for a quick thrill without having to spend time learning stuff. However I got more of an endorphin rush with the static line jump as I had to make the decision to jump, then control the parachute, land safely etc.
Here I go again on my own....

charities run jumps all the time.
my friends husband went with the MS society
he had to pay £500 and then he also gave them whatever he could get in sponsorship. but they also run free jumps if you can get enough sponsorship.

It was a tandam jump and he loved it so much he's been twice more off his own initiative- so a jump is potentially a good choice of present.

Thanks all for the response. we're actually in london phill79. Thank you so much Becles for the information. My hubby would love the static line jump. But do you know how much that would cost?

I did mine at Peterlee which is miles away from you! Just had a look on their website and they are charging £195 for the day's course and one jump.

Yes you could watch when I did mine.

My parents and children just stayed at the airfield while I did the tandem training, and then watched me jump.

When I did the static line one, I was in a classroom and mock aircraft most of the day, so people couldn't watch me. I rang my parents at the end of training and they drove over to see me do the actual jump. Unfortunately the wind dropped as we jumped, so we didn't get carried back to the airfield as expected. I had to land in a field of horses right over the other side of the airfield, so my family didn't see much :o
