The main reason some Final Salary Schemes have gone to the wall is the pile of legislation stopping the employers using the funds for other than the members benefits, has finally got so high there is no fiddle left thus making the scheme no longer a viable proposition.
The latest with the government giving this 90% gaurentee which bought them in line with Personal Pensions should the provider go belly up is not the final nail in the coffin, that'll come when the European Courts stop discrimination in this county and employees doing the same job will get equal pay.0
