MEDION AKOYA® MD 96640 multimedia notebook

To me this looks a better laptop than some of the more recent computers from Aldi. Not sure how it compares with Dell though.

Its got a lot of plus points but i would have though a T7xxx processor would be more appropriate.
A nice Dell would be the XPS M1530 for £630. Graphics aren't as good but nicer laptop.
Or this F3SG-AP015C Asus for £620 or this F3SG-AP081C Asus

Ive had several bad experiences with Medion support. Expensive 0870 numbers, long queues and poorly trained staff who sound like they cannot be bothered. I can guarentee that if anyone calls them with Laptop issue they will always say you need to do a full restore as their stock answer.

    agree with kevinyork
goods are ok, have bought a laptop and pc from them
but had terrible time getting pc fixed when it went dead
took them 2 weeks just to pick it up, the first time i rang them they said it would be pickup the next day, i waited all day in and they never came when i spoke to the company who was to pick it up they had no record of it what so ever, rang medion again, said it never got put thro, so put it in for the next day, again never picked up, this went on for 2 weeks, same excuse has not been put in for pickup or repair will do that now for you, 5 times it never got picked up and all the time and costs it was costing me, half of the time the phone would ring for over 50 mins and it says they will ring you back if you have been waiting more than 20 mins never happen and somethime after a long time, the phone line would go dead, when i did complain to the company office which deals with complaints all i got was a letter saying
we see that its been pick up and repaired now,
glad we could be of help to you
just makes you want to scream at them
apart from that just pray nothing goes wrong with your products

I have a Medion Desktop tower, my son bought the 96640 for when he started University in 2008. At that time using Dell's build your own computer, the cost to have the same hardware etc as the Medion had was over £1200.... A few months later (August) I purchased the same notebook as I was impressed by what my son had (and it was a £100 cheaper) and I wanted to be able to use a computer away from home.

It has to be said that the 96640 Notebook ran extremely hot after a number of months. A year later my graphics chip (an Nvidia chip) starrted to play up. Sometimes the screen would go blank, switching it off for a while would make it display OK the next time I started it up. Eventually the screen went a kind of greyish colour with thin multi coloured lines and I could not get the screen to display anything. I knew the laptop was ok because I could get some of the programs that used the audio to work ok (using the keystrokes from memory) I telephoned the Medion Support, they arranged to have my Notebook picked up within a couple of days, the courier supplied a box to pack it in (made for the Note book). It took a week and a half to fix. (They had changed the main board and the screen (there was a small problem with the screen that I had mentioned to medion support, it had been like it since new but I had put up with it as it wasn't that bad). The Note book was returned and on the day it was returned I had a text message to say it was on its way.

When my note book whent wrong I searched the net to see if others had had a similar problem, and I found that numerous people had had graphic chip problems with the same chip in my note book. Some were Medion customers but there were numerous other makes to. The consensus on the net was that the chip was at fault (I leave it to you to do your own investigation) not the manufacturer of the system.

Whats more a couple of weeks later my sons notebook died with exactly the same symptoms again Medion have taken it back exactly the same as mine. Again today the courier attempted to deliver it but no one was in at the time so they left a card. I will be contacting the courier to arrange delivery. Again it took a week and a half from sending off to getting delivery.

My other son had a similar problem with his desk top (tower) again the graphics card was at fault, but Medion fixed it without any hassle. All the computers have or had 3 year warranties I wouldn't think twice about purchasing from Medion.

The converse is true of Dell judging by the number of my collegues who purchased Dell computer and have had problems.

My Desktop tower is 6 years old and I have had no problems with it, My sons Desktop is about 4 years old and has not had any problems with it since his graphic card problem (at about 2 months), both our Notebooks failed with the same graphic chip problem after a about a year but was fixed in a reasonable amount of time by Medion. Would I buy or recommend a Medion PC You betcha I would! Excellent price, excellent kit, Excellent support when things do go wrong.

I know some of the posts complain about the support but I have not found it to be a problem. Perhaps in the past their may have been a problem with their support, but I have not found this to be the case whilst dealing with them.

Oh and I have an Honours degree in computing so I do understand these beasts.
