I'm not sure whether i am the victim of a cowboy builder or just caught up with a builder who is out of his depth.
He made a start this time last year and estimated he would be finished by Christmas then Easter, he has done a considerable amount but continually fails to do what was agreed for each week and seems to spend most of his time driving round placating the people he is working for.
Citizens advice say he should have it finished in a "reasonable time" but what is a reasonable time ? It requires a large dormer and will house 2 bedrooms. a bathroom and a new staircase. The job becomes increasingly stressful as time goes on and I have ended up shouting hysterically at him over the phone on a couple of occasions which gets us nowhere, HELP

How much have you paid up front? If it is less than the work that is done I would be inclined to give him a reaonsbale date in which to complete the work and if this is not done then get another builder. If you have paid more than the job is worth to date you may have to take him to court.

I had a conversion done over my garage (which is integral with the house so no staircase required, just 2 bedrooms, one with an en suite. The builder quoted 4-6 weeks. In the end it took 16 weeks and even the bin men were saying I should be charging them rent. At the end I would have paid them to go I was so fed up. I think your guys are really taking the p***. Agree with IVAN although it can be hard to get a builder to finish someone elses work ( and they know they have you over a barrel).Member #7 SKI-ers Club
