Business Mileage Claim

Yes it's no substitute for a 'proper' mileage allowance, but if your employer pays less than the 40p/25p (and you are happy with that as the rest of your pay deal makes up for it), then it is a nice bonus.0 -
Well thank you guys & gals for the support and advice.
After a rather bad bank holiday, I got to work on tuesday and hit him with it !!!
After an hour and a half, my boss and the accountant, with the odd murmurings from myself worked out a rate of 20p per mile and although its not 40p which was my first figure, the accountant pointed out that anything less than 20p would not be worth shuffling papers for and getting a company van would bring its own problems.
Again I got the feeling that I was being stuffed as the accountant knew about the in's and out's of the mileage scheme and whats payable to whom and when. However ...... I asked (playing dumb) if I could claim for last years miles, so she's going to fill in a tax return for me and help me claim last years 13000 miles.
At the moment with the cost of living and increasing fuel prices I seem to have won a small battle in the war of life so at least in the coming months im not going to be subsidising company margins (or at least not so much), and maybe with a little creative driving and re-programming of my satnav I may even start to make some long awaited holiday funds .......
Once again many thanks.
Regards

Hi Andy,
I agree - you have been stuffed (or hoodwinked) by the accountant. It is very kind of her to offer to help with your tax return - not!!!!! It should be the company re-imbursing you for your expenses, not the tax man.
By the way, is she a director or shareholder of the company? From the advice she has given, I would assume that she is!
Also, why does a company van bring it's own problems? I would suggest that the problems would be theirs not yours i.e. they would have to cough up for the running costs instead of you.
I know this sounds obvious but.....every pound they don't pay you is another pound in your bosses pocket. If a company provides field support/service and doesn't charge travel time and expenses to their customers then that business model is likely to fail, unless they get someone else to provide it for free. You are still being shafted big time - get another job. They don't deserve you!

Hi all I hope you can help me.
I am employed as a handyman to carry out small jobs in older people’s homes.
I use my own car and I am paid a mileage allowance for all business journeys other than from home too office and office to home.
I can claim mileage to each job from my place of work. However when I finish my last job I can go straight home without returning to the office.
My normal journey home from the office is 5 miles.
If I travel 5 miles from my last job to my house I don’t claim the 5 miles as expenses.
My employer has told me that if I only travel 5 miles from my last job to my home I must also knock the 5 miles of any other claimable mileage that I have done that day as I have not returned to my place of work.
So I am not claiming the 5 mile journey home and having a further 5 miles deducted from my legitimate mileage claim. Is this right is it legal?
I can always go from my last job back to the office and claim that mileage and then go home but this seems a waste of time and fuel.
Thanks
Steve0
