Have you built up entitlement to the State Pension? (you will only need 30 years of contributions as your retirement date is after April 2010).

If you're talking about a private/occupational pension, then take advice from an Independent Financial Advisor.

Well, the thing to stress is that IT'S NEVER TOO LATE. Start now. Do you save anything? If not, you really should give it a bit of a try - ISAs first. But you should definitely go to an IFA - ask around because recommendations are always the best way. You may think your amounts of money are so small it's not worth it; the very opposite is true, a good IFA can make the best of the little you have and, let's face it, you've probably got around 15 years to get a pension underway. Does your employer do any kind of pension scheme?

I wouldn't want any of it -got my pride!

I will be able to join my employer's stakeholder scheme in August, is this the way to go?

How big a state pension? There are two of them and they can vary from as little as 20p a week to as much as 12k a year. If you have worked quite a bit, you could get more than you think.

Excellent. If really desperate in old age, you can access 50% of its value in cash or as an income via a lifetime mortgage which isn't paid back until after you die.

So things are already not nearly as bad as they might seem :

    Do you have other savings/investments?
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

I completely agree with chesky above. It's never too late! Anyone can save in a pension up to age 75, and get tax relief on the contributions i.e. if you save 80p the taxman makes it up to £1.
