With respect, how would you know, since you leave it all up to your IFA?

Theres' a lot of unjustified mystique put around about the alleged complexities of investing - usually by people who get paid to do it for you. It's understandable, but hardly helpful to those who want to learn.

Many investors who've successfully made the move to DIY will tell you it's not as hard as it looks.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

You're correct - I do leave all the important stuff to my IFA.

It hasn't stopped me learning though and more than enough to realise that a few basic concepts are not going to get me very far. I know perfectly well how to look up Citywire and Trustnet, organise data into cumulative and discrete performance and even look at manager's ratings etc. I know about volatility and yield. In fact I probably know enough to have a stab at investing on my own.

However what I do know is that I am unlikely to obtain the same level of return with my dabbling and I'm happy to pay someone to do it for me.

My adviser has not put around any unjustified mystique about investing. In fact he's the one who has unravelled a lot of the complexities by being happy to explain things and answer any questions.

And what about the unsuccessful ones who have followed the latest fashion and lost a packet? Of course the successful ones will tell you it's not hard - what would you expect them to say?
