Agreed, Ceridwen. I did gather a lot of blackberries a week or so back, but they were absolutely dripping off the bushes. And in my defence, as I saw a man coming onto the common with a tupperware box in hand I did point him to a patch I know to be very prolific, that I hadn't even needed to look at as there were so many everywhere else.

There's only one elder tree on the common though, so those berries are mine! (Joke ;) )

Agree too and don't forget to leave some for the wildlife too!

I also recommend Food for free but do arm yourself with a really good mushroom book that has lots of detail. I own 7 :o A little pocket sized one for when I'm out and then the others for cross referencing to make sure when I get home.

We have a secret patch of chantarelles that I'm afraid I'm not sharing with anyone Ceridwen. :D They are halfway up a mountain in Scotland though. We checked them last weekend and barring the wildlife eating them, they will be ready in a week or so. ;)

"Nature's Wild Harvest" by Eric Soothill and Michael J Thomas is one of the best-thumbed books in my kitchen. I think it's out of print at present, but a quick look on Amazon revealed that they have used copies available, and e-bay might also be a possible source.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
