    i found a cheaper quote this year so changed car insurers. ten days later i get a letter from new company saying they wanted an extra £100 due to my details being on a database stating i was a fault driver. i refused to pay, they had copies of my no claims, details from my previous insurer to state no claims had been made.
    i then went on holiday, on my return i had a letter to say they had cancelled my insurance due to the non payment of the supplement. after several phone calls i am worse off to the tune of £200 they cancelled, they are keeping all the money stating loss of commission, loss of policy, admin fees oh and the supplement which i refused to pay.
    i have since had this database checked and it doesnt say i was at fault. so the new insurers got it totally wrong and have now robbed me. i have sent a letter of complaint but dont hold much hope. where do i go from here?

    That really sucks and I sympathise with you. I would try and get hold of someone senior in the company or failing that take it up with the FSA.

    The fee range is in the typical range. They are not required to tell you what it covers and the front line telephone staff are unlikely to know or need to know. Indeed, they wouldnt be front line telephone staff if they had that sort of knowledge.

    Typical range is up to £50, anything over that should be challenged by an official letter of complaint, and refered to the FOS.
    They are also obliged to tell you the fee as part of your t&c's, it's not a number they can make up later, so it's £35, or £40, or £50 but can't be altered after you have taken out the insurance.
    And yes, they have to tell you what the fee covers.
    It's not an open cheque for them when they want to dip into your wallet.

    Prud charged me £15.90 for swapping cars on motor policy. They call it an additional premium. TWICE. Boring Boring Boring.....

    In the SAME phone call, I pointed out that my address was HR8 and no longer HR4.
    This they chose to ignore, I discovered when new documents arrived.

    Chased Prudential (by post as phone is security hassle) to correct address. Then receive second letter 'following requested amendment, an addl premium of £15.90 is due.' SECOND admin fee (love it, you shysters)

    Any way of not paying these shysters? Absolute hassle for cost of £15.90 to point out THEIR mistake in not recording address change in first phone call.

    How many people give in and and don't bother chasing refund because so much hassle chasing less than £50?
    Anyone real out there who might be interested in stopping Insurance Co. DODGY marketing? For goodness sake who has the time to read their mindless small print (is why they do small print!!)?

    Anyone want to set up a ROGUE'S website for DODGY marketing practices? Prudential, Esure, Talk-Talk? No?

    It's the financial ombudsman service (FOS) not the FSA. They are 2 completely different regulators.

    You need to complain to the company in writing first to the complaints address in your policy documents before contacting the FOS.

    Send the letter to them by recorded signed for post and make sure it has the title on it "Formal complaint".

    The reasons to do this is:
    1. Insurance and other companies have a habit of "losing" complaint letters. No regulator will believe they have lost a tracked letter.
    2. Insurers and other companies don't take letters as complaint letters unless they say so.

    If you have phoned them over the issue then in the letter ask for their "final response" to your complaint mentioning the phone calls otherwise you could be going back and forth for a few months.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • took out policy through rac, the policy is with premier under writers. i have got a men car and tried changing the policy over to be told they do not insure cars to my value. i have had the policy for 2 months and been told they will charge a £35 cancellation fee plus early cancellation fee which is 50 per cent of the premium. they have said that if i stop with the rac and go with a new under writers i won't need to pay the fees. however there are about £250 more than the next cheapest quote i can find myself.

    i have tried to argue that it is not my fault they do not insure more extensive vehicles.

    can anyone give any advice how to get out of paying the fees?
