What's wrong with PC World etc?

Looking at buying a laptop and have seen quite a few posts suggesting not to buy from PC World, Curry's etc. Any particular reason?

Poor service and support, wrong information being given by inexperienced sales staff and overpriced goods apart from the odd deal here and there if you know what your looking for and its no wonder we say stay away

Maybe I'm very unlucky and everyone I know is, but I actually can't remember a single time when I've heard a staff member of PC World give technically correct information. Ok I don't go there much myself but I'll quite often get a phone call from a friend or family member asking if what they've been told is right and it never has.

however most stuff is overpriced, out of date stuff

Last time I went into PC World it was great. I needed a USB keyboard and my local pc techie shop didn't have any in stock. I went into PC world, couldn't find the shelf where the keyboards were. Asked a PC World 'salesman/techie' guy and he took me directly to the correct shelf.

Bonus was it cost less than my usual pc techie shop sold them for.

Still wouldn't buy a pc from them.

Is this how we now gauge a good experience with PC World :D

They do sometimes have some good deals on headline items, but tend to compensate by overcharging elsewhere. They used to sell standard USB cables (e.g. for a printer) for £15 - when a functionally identical cable could be bought from ebuyer for about 50p or at a local market stall for a couple of quid.

As other people have said, if you know what you want and have checked that the price is competitive, they are OK - but don't rely on the sales staff to do anything more than read out the product card to you.

I've used them a few times bits and pieces. 320GB WD Passport Drive, Samsung 22" Monitor, Graphics Card etc but never a full PC.

The thing that annoys me with them and Currys, Dixons, Comet etc is in the shop the price is say £100 order and reserve on the Web walk in shop with reservation number and get the same item for £75.

At the end of the day, if you know exactly what you want down to make & model, you've done your homework and checked the prices, they can be pretty good.
    Cheers
