Tax Coding on Payslips

Hi All

Brief history:

I got made redundant just before christmas, and the company was very very slow at sending out my P45.

Eventually they did, but i had already left the "temp" job i got after christmas. So i had BR as the tax code on my payslips and P45 from temp job.

I have just started my new job, and the accounts have said that the tax code is wrong, but that they have to use it until i fill out a form they are sending me.

Does this mean i have been emergency taxed for the last 3/4 months??

Will I get it back? And if yes how?

Thanks

If your payslips said "BR" then yes, you have been emergency taxed, and you are due this back.

When your new employers sort your tax code, call the tax office that is local to you, give them your information, and they will arrange a rebate asap.

    Thank you!

I am currently filling out a P46 form which the new employer said they will send with my P45 so that the tax code can be sorted out.

I will phone for a rebate as soon as its all been okyd.

You will need to contact the tax office for your current employers - NOT your local office. You will need to send your copy of the P45 & your P60 to that tax office, with a letter requesting a refund of overpaid tax from tax year 2007/8.

(I only know this because I have had to chase up refunds of overpayments in 2 different tax years for my DS1, and that is what I was advised by HMRC to do.)

Send all the P60's / P45's to your current tax office. They will then sort it out. :) Emergency tax can only be refunded by an employer in the tax year it was deducted.

    Thanks.

I have just spoken to our accountants and she said if i send her the P60 she will send it off with the P45 (so that should sort this companies "rebate") and then she will call me tomorrow with teh details of the tax office to contact re: my previous employer!

Fingers crossed that all works out! :rotfl:
