Why am I paying for BT's errors?

Has anyone incurred problems changing from BT dial up to BT Broadband. Agreed to pay by direct debit after years of receiving a paper bill and paying by cheque - big mistake! BT did not follow my instructions and cancel dial up after Broadband was installed and I have been billed for both services. On 24 April 2008, after accessing my bill online(dd due to go out on 6th May), I notified BT of their error. I spent 3 hours on the phone either in a queuing system or being passed from person to person and being cut off twice. Was eventually told they would issue a new bill. Yesterday I telephoned again having still not received a revised bill was again passed around the depts and this time was told it will take another week to sort out. By this time the direct debit will have gone out - an overpayment of £47.96 incl. VAT. Told I will have to wait until July before it is refunded on my next bill. Why am I made to pay for BT's errors?
2 years ago I cancelled their call baring service but they continued to charge me for three further quarters before I noticed it. Eventually I received a refund minus VAT.
Has anyone got an easy solution in dealing with British Telecom and the over payment of charges? I think half the problem is that you cannot get to speak to someone in this country and they say they have no way of transferring you!

Demand that they do not deduct and warn them of the requirements for DD, take the name of the operative, write and confirm [not email or phone], then cut the DD if they overcharge despite instruction.. And deal with them in writing the moment it begins to go wrong. Be prepared to move your custom and to prove your point to a court. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -
Would suggest that you contact your bank regarding a wrongly deducted DD. It is them that guarantee the DD sysrem.0

You can file an indemnity claim with your bank as part of the direct debit guarantee to get the money back in your account, if it is indeed taken. They should be able to put a hold on it though.0
