To get and learn the cello

I have wanted to play the cello for years.

Have been asking on my local free cycle for some time... but no result.

As all our money (we have 5 jobs between the 2 of us) goes to the 'saving a deposit' fund.

We cant afford me to buy one new or cheap second hand (as they are not so cheap!).

Any ideas?

About the only thing I can think of is to have a look round some carboots. I know sometimes there are guitars and things there. You would have to be very luck to find a cello that worked but you never know!

Also were you thinking of getting proper lessons? If so have you found out if any teachers will let you use one they may have for lessons? Also avoids the problem of buying one and finding out you dont like playing it.

Music shops often hire them out. My daughter desperately wanted a cello so for her 18th birthday present we are paying to hire one and for lessons. We found a great strings repair shop who have rented us a cello for £40 per quarter. Usually start at £60/quarter but this wasn't a new one. Have also found a teacher and she says the cello is fine and a good make.
If you want details pm me. I am in NW Surrey.
Generally try music shops or possibly contact your local council department who deal with childrens' music lessons, as they may be able to help.
