My son sees a nurse every fortnight and as is boss lets him work when he wants and also keeps an eye on him as his boss is also his landlord and can spot any change in him quite quickly.
It was hard to get him diagnosed though and I think there should be more awareness of pyschiatric illnesses as I and his boss and many others had tried to get him assessed...he eventually got into a hospital and spent 6 months there...and is great now.He never told me about the lows until he was in hospital and that really shocked me....and frightened me!!!...the highs he has always had and was a very hyper kid when younger. He has never been a danger to other people but has been a danger to himself by thinking he was really tough and nearly getting in fights.
Like I say he is doing great now and at least we know what the signs are now and the hospital couldn't believe how he had manage to do ok outside as he was so ill.

OSNS - OMG no wonder you struggle to sleep! I can't even bring myself to re-read your question coz if I start thinking about it I'll never sleep!!

I'm most productive at this time in the morning. I'm doing an essay on globalisation and can't stand it. Got an exam on geomorphology tomorrow. As you can guess, I can't really stand that either! :(
