Any advice on this???Bank account query

Almost 3 years ago I paid a cheque into my bank account as payment for a car.I got a letter from the bank saying it was a fake cheque and that it had been unpaid.
Thinking no more of it until it came about that the bank had "frozen" my account,I could pay in,but all direct debits had been stopped, except to themselves for house insurance???This meant I bounced 2 mortgage payments, and several other payments,I contacted all creditors and explained what happened, and was assured by my bank that all creditors would be contacted and the matter straightened out.
About a year later I was arranging for my own house to be remortgaged and a BTL mortgage for a property to sell on,when it came up that the missed payment hadn't been removed. It meant that I had to use "sub prime" lenders for both, not as bad with my own home but for the BTL the only deal I could get had a redemption figure of around £12k!!!!!
My personal mortgage is also at a higher rate than it would of been otherwise.
Is there anycome back to my bank(the abbey)as at no stage did they tell me that my account was frozen, nor di they rectify the problem for me.
Would it be worth speaking to a solicitor?
