Is this allowed?

This is my first posting so please be gentle! I buy and sell bits and pieces on ebay, nothing major just whats surplus to household requirements. I have a paypal account and last week they contacted me to say a restriction had been placed on my account due to limitation processes placed by money laundering laws.I had to 1st verify my bank details with them, 2 allow them to take £1 from my account which took 3 days, 3rd when the money was debited use the 4 digit code quoted at the side of the debit on my statement to code in to my paypal account and voila! restriction was lifted. WHAT THEY DIDN'T SAY was that on the same day as the £1 started to be processed so too did 3 x £2.50 amounts start to be processed from my account and here I am 7 days later still without the £7.50 because whilst it has not been officially debited - as in noted as a debit from my account it is not available to me in my available funds total either. Where is this money? Why has it gone from my account without me giving authority? Can they do this?

Are you absolutely sure it was Paypal you were dealing with and that you haven't been caught out by somebody 'phishing' for your details?

I think you should be really careful. It sounds suspect and they may have taken a small amount out to see if you pick up on it and come back for alot more. I'd contact your bank and ask exactly where the money has gone.

I remember something like this happening to me. It was definitely not a spoof (although I'm not saying this isn't).

I think that when you get to a certain number of transactions, or perhaps a certain amount of money that you've paid by Paypal - can't quite remember which - they want to verify your account.

From what I recall, I think I had to specify an amount between 1p and £1, something like that. When the amount I specified was debited from my bank account, there was a code (as the OP says) which needs to be entered. This then lifted the restriction and I was able to use Paypal again and they repaid me the money. The process may have changed lately, of course, but I'm sure that's what I had to do.

Have you called them to discuss it? If I need to speak to them, I phone the office in Ireland at 1p per minute (via 1899 or similar) as it's cheaper than ringing the UK office.
  • I would go on the Question and Answer forum on ebay and ask advice there...I am sure someone on there can help you.

It all works out good in the end.
If it's not good, it's not the end!
