Timber for woodworking

Hi!
I'm starting to take up woodworking more seriously now but am stuck as to where I can get my hands on small quantitied of oak, beech, other hardwoods etc. I have a few small projects I'd like to tackle, trays, stools, small tables etc.
DIY stores generally stock low-grade pine, and timber yards tend not to give you the time of day unless you're trade.
Any ideas where I might source small amounts of hardwoods, or online resources that might give me some direction? (Am in Newcastle area)
Thanks,
Miles.
