Hi All,
My aunt is in severe debt and her house is on the market, she is asking us for money to help her clear her debt, now I don't want to keep throwing money after her as it is a drop in the ocean compared to what she owes.
I just wanted to know what agencies/debt management companies she should contact to get herself sorted, so I can pass on details to her.
Regards
Desi

The others have already suggested the right places.
If you want to read more, and especially why you should use these, then Martin has written this article:

Hi Desi,
There are a number of Debt Advice organisations your Aunt could go to. I would recommend going to one of the free ones listed in Numpty Monkeys message.
I am a debt counsellor that works for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS). The CCCS have a free debt advice system called Debt Remedy – All your Aunt would need to do is input her income and expenditure and the system will let her know exactly where she stands financially and the best way forward. This link goes directly to Debt Remedy. Or if your Aunt would prefer she could have an appointment with a trained debt counsellor, she would need to call 0800 138 1111 for an appointment.
If there is anything you would like to ask me directly just give me a shoutI am a Debt Counsellor that works for the CCCS and have specific permission from Martin, to post on these boards to try and help those in debt. Read more information on the CCCS and what it does in the Debt Problems: What to do and where to get help article.
CCCS is a registered charity, and there is no charge whatsoever for any of the services we provide to our clients. We take great pride in offering first class help and advice, but we only offer this where we have been able to fully explore and understand your circumstances with you. We want to help you understand these choices and their possible implications but not make them for you.

The problem is your aunt needs to make the decision to sort out her debts, otherwise it's like leading a horse to water and pleading with it to drink..
Giving her money will simply prolong the problem, instead of getting her to look at a solution0 -
I think you are right not to lend her money - well, it would amount to giving it to her, wouldn't it. She clearly hasn't the first idea of how to deal with money. Helping her to sort it out herself is by far the best way to support her.0
