You were optimistic in thinking people would be considerate imo! Things like that almost always brings out the worst in people.

My oh was always cheesed off about this in his last job and it stems from him thinking everyone has the same sense of fairness he has. When it comes to the workplace and getting entitlements, most don't! Or if they have it, it seems to disappear once the need to compete takes over!

Your right - it does annoy me that I am always considerate when placing holidays in the book, i check to see who is available to cover and sometimes change it when I see someone having to work extra hours! maybe i will join the rest and only think about myself - its a shame that it does bring out the worst in people, thats my problem I always look to see the good and put myself out for others, maybe its time for me to become as inconsiderate as them! :D

This is a common problem when there are small teams and they provide a service. Its also a trick question as there is no correct answer that will satisfy everybody.

it may be annoying but why should other people consider you when applying for hols ? they have their own situations to work around [child care /partners hols]. where i work hols can be booked in august for the following year everyone knows this and with the exception of some of the younger staff most hols are booked by the begining of sept .it works well , and hols are granted on a 1st come 1st served basis.

Call us naive, but some of us like to think most people are able to see beyond their own world view and demonstrate empathy towards fellow human beings - particularly the ones they know.

ok YOUR NAIVE ! as a parent my only concern when booking hols is my child care arrangenents /hubbys hols .why should i pay extra child care costs just because some people dont /cant be organised ! far from the op workmates being childish i suggest they are just organised ! maybe if there was a limit to the lenght of hols [ie 2 wks ] this may easy the problem but i suspect the op would still not be happy /organised !

This is why there was always a "factory fortnight". We still have a shutdown for 2 weeks in Aug. There is sometimes availkability for some to go in on maintenance etc but it means everyone gets to be off in the summer hols when schools are off. I understand a lot of places cannot do this though.

Thankfully my kids are now grown up, and I only have me & my boss to think about re holidays..... however, I have worked in several places where you could only book a maximum of 2 weeks (even our Editor had to ask for permission for 3 weeks when she went on a world trip for her silver wedding), and also in a company where the HR manager & myself allocated 2 weeks holidays to all staff, based on when you had taken your "main" holidays the previous year.

Perhaps your bosses need to give this matter some thought, and consider the various options mentioned.
