Lost/stolen card. Bank will not reimburse

Hopefully, someone can help me with some advice, so i'll try to keep this simple.

On 29th March, i lost my wallet which had an Abbey Mulitfunction Visa card in it, which operated my 3 accounts, 2 current and 1 E-saver account.
After checkin my account on 29th march and realising 250 had been drawn out of one of my current accounts unknown to me, i phoned Abbey to cancel the card (on 29th March).
2 days later, on 31st March the card was used again to withdraw 600 pounds, and then 2 days later again, on 2nd April a further 100 pounds was drawn out from my 2nd current account totalling 700 pounds. The bank in question have refused to reimburse the loss.
Now correct me if i'm wrong, but after i have cancelled a card, AM I LIABLE FOR ANY MONEY WITHDRAWN???

Hopefully, someone can help me here, please...... as i'm banging my head against a brick wall here....

Thanks..
J.

Wow! This sounds really bad. They usually mark the card for you and ask you about any transactions after the card is stolen. I had a card pinched out of my jacket pocket in a club a few years back and called when I got home after realising it was gone. Some thief spent a small fortune on shopping and pub meals that totalled nearly £1000! I just had to report it solen to the police and give a statement to the bank who then credited me back the money.
I'd suggest you contact your local CAB who can bring powers to bear on the bank - also the banking obudsman might be worth contacting.

    Hope you get sorted?

ps. Wasn't their a similar case recently on watchdog with Abbey where they refused to pay back the money until watchdog got involved?
  • you're correct, you're not liable for the withdrawn money, the bank obviously didn't cancel the card properly and are trying to blame you.

Please correct me if I am wrong but did OP say that he had one multifunction card which operates 3 accounts?
    Does such a card exist?

If it does it is a new one on me.
I have always thought that one card works on one account only.
  • Thats correct.
Its an Abbey multifunction card, with which i can access all 3 of my accounts using 1 card,
I've had it for a few years now..

Basically, it just links all your accounts together rather than having 3 different cards...

Anyone else ever heard of this?
    This sounds fishy to me.

There is nothing on the Abbey site about this 'card'.

I can use my Abbey Debit Card to access my current as well as my e-saver account from an Abbey machine.
I can draw money from either account or shift monies between the two. I can get the balance from either account.

I can only do it from an Abbey machine. Every other national or international machine is linked to my current account only.

If it’s possible to link more than one current- or several savings accounts to the same card, I wouldn’t know.

is the issue with abbey that they must have had your PIN to be able to withdraw the money? even so, i'm sure that if you cancel a card, they should not expect you to cover the costs of money withdrawn after that time.

OP mentions the money £250 taken out then rung to cancel it? i dont think the bank are liable for that £250 as you didnt report the card straight away but im sure any transactions after that they are liable for.

Surely for them to draw cash out fo your account they would need your PIN. Was this in your wallet with the card?

If you did keep your PIN in your wallet with the card the bank may claim you were negligent and may refuse to cover any loses.

Did you get written confirmation of them cancelling your card? Did you report these transactions to the Police?

Yes you can get cards that link accounts, these have been around for a long time now, you can use cash machines to move money between accounts and withdraw cash.
