A freind told me that some competition sites make money by collecting your personal details (address, phone number, email etc) and that this is why they can afford to offer the comps. Is this true?

Which sites offer good comps without this drawback?

Yes, probably.

As a rule of thumb, any sites with a 4 in their title, i would leave well alone.
