I wish house prices would blummin hurry up and fall!!!
(I'm a biased potential FTB waiting for a 2 bed hosue to finally come into my price range).0 -
Food prices are never high 3 years running. It's not possible. It's too quick and easy to put more land under the plough.
I planted some lettuces last weekend and they've already sprouted. They'll be pickable in 4-6 weeks and that'll be £4pw I won't be spending on food. The tomatoes will go in next time I see a cheap plant sale outside someone's house. That's another £2.50 pw saved.0 -

That's a lot of lettuce - presumably your rabbit farm will save you even more?;)
That's the main bit I miss about renting, not being able to grow all my own vegetables. I thought about digging up the lawn, but decided against it......0 -

You may not know this but the food shortage is world wide. The IMF & World Bank killed off sustainable domestic agriculture in much of developing world by flooding these markets with cheaper subsidized foreign food. It will take years to replace and thats if these poor countries can get funding.
On top of this climate change is killing off much of the large food providers. High international food prices will keep them high here.:exclamatiScams - Shared Equity, Shared Ownership, Newbuy, Firstbuy and Help to Buy.

The drought in Aus combined with dumping by the EU and US have caused some shortages. Speculation by hedge funds has driven prices higher too.
Things seem to be improving in parts of Aus (although the Murray-Darling basin is pretty dry, many wine growing regions have had rain which frees up irrigation water to other farmers).
Farmers can react very quickly to rising prices as can individuals. Things like salad, herbs and courgettes are a doddle to grow.
The only real concern I have regarding food prices a couple of years from now is protectionism which is on the rise and really effs things up.0 -

You need to watch it, it's addictive.
My Dad, last year, grew runner bean, dwarf beans, tomatoes (3 different types), butternut squashes, pumpkins, marrows, corgettes, new spuds, turnips, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, raddishes, cucumbers, sweetcorn cobs, onions, garlic, and various types of fruit....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I'd love a decent sized garden or bit of land to grow my own food on. And not just because the cost of fruit and veg is skyrocketing, I like the idea of being self-reliant and growing your own food is one of the most useful and worthwhile things you can do with your time. Beats wasting away in a regular job anyway.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
My Dad has a little part-time sideline in being a QC, as well as the veggie growing (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

absolutely,!!!!!!. nuture the plants. watch them grow.harvest the stuff. and all the time knowing that you've helped reduce the profits of the supermarkets. It's all going to taste better as well.
too bad my garden's not big enough to do this, but a friend grows aplenty and shares some with moi.
believe me, it all tastes better - even the carrots the size of pencils and the golf-ball size cauli's.
quality, not quantity.
just as an aside: neverdespairgirl is generous with her thanks, but she hasn't thanked me for voting lib-dem. I've allready told her that I love her and want her to have my children (I'm going away next week and thought she could babysit), but because she's going to vote con. she's cut me adrift.
I knew that bloody poll was a bad idea.............miladdo0 -

S'ok, I'll forgive you, my OH votes LD as well....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
