We have 2 PC's which are networked via a wireless router. Last week PC 1 started to act up,windows wouldnt load, and it kept shutting down and rebooting itself but never opened,so we disconnected it from the system intending to take it to be repaired. Then PC 2 started acting in the same way.......any ideas?

Assuming it's software related, there are plenty of viruses and malware that can spread over a local network and it sounds like that may be what has happened.

If it's hardware, you could be unlucky and have had a mains spike. If they were plugged into the same extension lead, it could actually be that that's faulty.

I would think it may be a virus Tthen as the PC's belong to teen sons who download constantly, but they are virus protected and no warning came up as far as I am aware. They are not on the same extension lead.

Sounds like the good old blaster worm virus, the latter shows very similar pattern to what you have described, first I would recommend booting the PC in safe mode and if you can get into windows run system restore and role it back to a few days or even a week ago, also I am not sure what antivirus software you have but I would suggest installing AVAST as it is free and does a boot time scan, you can also install AVAST during safe mode as well
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Disable restore, boot up to safe mode and run some antivirus software.

When it is clean turn restore back on.

In exasperation installed AVAST and hey presto it found a virus worm. Laptop was up and running soon after and still ok (touch wood).:j
AVG couldn't handle it at all and I duly un-installed it before getting AVAST.
But what I'd like to know is, how safe am I now, am I cured? Is on-line banking advisable?
(Got firewall in place, AVAST:beer: as an anti-virus,but no anti-spyware yet as AVAST also does this (I think).
