    Hiah,

Thanks alot for the additional replys. I will look into the screens for the windows/doors so we can have them open. Already have the head gear for when gardening!! Interesting to find colour isn't the factor. Been reading up on them on the internet also. Its amazing how a moisteriser has been found to be a midge repellent, wonder if anymore work too!

    Thanks again

We used to go camping up the West Coast - one night got the tent up then couldn't leave it so theywere so bad! We were tempted to drive off and leave the tent.

Bought the hoods - those work, but the thought of wearing gloves etc in summer!

Visit friends often in the Black Isle area - ever noticed them as bad there. Don't let it put you off though it is a beautiful part of the country!

Keep an eye on the Midge Forecast, not sure how accurate it is though. I use Avon Skin So Soft (although I don't like the smell, bit chemically) to try and ward them off but they don't bother me too much anyway, perhaps a childhood in Orkney made me immune.

Don't do what I did in Skye once and open the windows at night with a light on (I was feeling ill and wanted some air, not thinking straight) and they came swarming in.

midges are bad in fort william in midge season, which runs from about now-end sep (summer). In damp rainy weather they can be bad as they love that weather. Usually they're only out early morning and late evening as the sun is going down, you dont usually get them sitting in your garden until then. However, if you were to be in woodland/fishing/etc then it wd be all day. You get used to em but they do get really annoying on a summers night after work when u want to chill in your garden but cant coz of the midges!! Theres products out there you can buy i.e. avon skin so soft (green). And yes the east coast is meant to be not nearly as bad for the midges, so inverness etc should be better than fort w! xmyx

Last time I looked Inverness was nowhere near East Coast :)

Anywhere where there is standing water (lochs etc.) and woodland - or both!  - there will be midgies.

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replys. We won't let them put us off, but are at least better educated about them now. Fort William sounds bad and thats probably where we will end up!!
Will have to try the avon moisteriser.

    Thanks again

They are testing a new spray but won't be available for a while (if it works):

Anytime you see silver birch trees, run in the opposite direction !! They congregate around them more, for some reason, iirc

    Hi

I am thinking of moving to Smithton, Inverness from the South East of England. Do you get a lot of midges in/around the Inverness area?

    Cheers:)
