American/Canadian 'yellow cake mix'?

I've seen a recipe I'd like to make but it calls for an unspecified quantity of 'yellow cake mix'.
Does anyone know what it is, whether it's ok to use i.e. is it choc full of additives etc, and where I might get some... I'm in Yorkshire.
TIA

It's just a plain cake mix, so if you want, you could substitute an equal quantity of HM sponge cake batter for the same result.2015 comp wins - £370.25

Hello! yes a lot of Canadian/American cake mixes contain pudding - it is supposed to make the cake moister. The puddings are sold seperately over there and come in various flavours such as vanilla, choc etc. I think they were made by Jello and I have never seen them on sale in this country but in taste they were sort of similar to cold custard.
Hope that helps! If you are using a recipe that calls for a cake mix containing pudding I think any good quality cake mix would suffice!:T

I wonder if you could substitute blancmange powder/table cream mix for 'pudding'? I've tried American pudding and it did remind me a bit of blancmange, not quite as set and wobbly but it might be a fair substitute.
If not, you could try somewhere like Cybercandy or The Stateside Candy Co, they have these and the Jello pudding mixes.0 -
You could probably subsitute the long-life custard type desserts for pudding; like the Ambrosia chocolate custard snack pot things?2015 comp wins - £370.25
