Am I Liable To Pay Council Tax?

Hi all,
I'm moving back to the UK in July to do a full time post-grad course at university. I'm hoping to find an apartment at some point in July however my uni course starts at the end of August.
A friend said that I will be liable to pay council tax on the property from the date I get it until the date I start uni - however during that period I will not be employed. Is her information correct?

It depends on the council - technically you are only a student on the dates certified by the university on your student certificate and it is only during that period that council discounts/exemptions will apply, however in the L/A I work for, the general policy is we will give it from the start of the tenancy if it is taken in order to be a full time student and the start date is reasonable i.e. not more than a month or two in advance.,.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
