Can your GP refuse you a certain treatment because they don't believe in it ?

Well, he is right. Coughs clear up themselves naturally.
And I don't think it's a good idea going to the doctor to get cough medicine you could just get from the pharmacist, it takes up the doctor's time that could be spent on people who really need the care, and damages the NHS.0 -
Thanks for all the advice.
I think I will initially write to him and see what he has to say about it.
I should also point out that I went in armed with lots of different reasearch not just internet I am a student nurse and I have access to loads of research from the uni library now as a SN I know I have no qualification whatsoever but I'm just saying I wasn't led by any media hype I have looked into things properly he won't even discuss it with me I don't think its a cost issue as the printed cost in the BNF is not that great however it just seems to me like what he says goes and I don't think that is right or fair tbh.
Although the medications I asked for are not life saving drugs they are drugs that would improve my quality of life and I have agreed to follow any protocol for them that he has but his stance is he doesn't believe in the particular medicine so he will not prescribe NHS or private.
As for the others in the practice they are all pretty much the same mindset there are 2 others there. If I turned up with something like a chest infection they are very good, and the very same GP helped me alot with some gynaecology troubles some time ago but new treatments are very rarely prescribed.
Thanks again poppy xx:j:love: Getting married to the man of my dreams 5th November 2011:j

A Doctor may not "recommend" someone for an abortion but they cannot actually stop a person having one.
Hi, I work at a gp practice where we had a dr who did not agree with abortion on religious grounds, if someone went to see him and they want referring for abortion he wouldnt do the referral. he would explain he does not do referrals for abortion and then send them to another colleague who is willing to do the referral, then his conscience is clear. same for the mornng after pill.0 -

please look here http://www.cptech.org/ip/health/econ/allocation.html it shows R&D vs marketing costs for the big boys0 -

Alot of the 'new' drugs coming on the market are what's known as 'me too' drugs.
Basically an established pill is taken, tweaked, tested and launched as a new treatment. There are alot of tweaked versions of the benzo's and anti-depressants and major tranquilizers. It allows the drug companies to extend the profit on a drug because they get a new patent for a 'new' drug. They don't have to prove that the new version is better than the previous. Just that it works better than a sugar pill placebo1 -
Like the two different doctors that told me my grumbling appendix (which later ruptured) was gastro-enteritis despite me not having stuff violently exploding from either end of my digestive tract?
Like the doctors who consistently, over six years, misdiagnosed my father's Addison's disease, telling him he was a malingerer?
Like the woman GP I contacted regarding severe PMT, symptoms including panic attack, suicidal thoughts, depressive mood, etc who told me it was my age (I'm only 37!) and that I needed to cut down on caffeine and exercise more. Right. I see loads of depressed people at the gym. It's the only place you want to go when you feel like that!
Yes, I trust GPs.
As far as I can throw them tied to an elephant.
They are just that, general practitioners. If you are not happy, see another one. And don't be afraid to ask why, specifically, your GP is refusing that medication when you think it would be beneficial to you.
And good luck!
Yup i got a problem with my gp who refuses to treat me if he thinks it's a side effect to my illness, because i am still under a consultant, yet the consultant won't help and keeps telling me to see my gp, so whilst both are pointing at the other, i'm not getting treatment, so last time i went to the hospital, they were about to give me drugs that i will need for the rest of my life, i told them i am refusing any further drugs until either one can be responsible for my health and welfare.
so far so good, i am managing my illness drugs free for one month and 2 weeks so farLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

erm isn't that unethical for him to refuse based on his religion?
either he is a doctor or not.
it's almost like saying i am a heart surgeon but i won't give you blood transfusions because of my religious beliefs, (i know sounds stupid)
no disrespect to you wishing4amoneytree.Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

if you are exempt from paying prescription charges they yes i would ask my gp for the cough medicine,
although i agree that coughs usually go eventually but so sometimes they need that lil bit of helpLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

apparently he is completely entitled to do that. He isnt completely refusing treatment or stopping treatment being available he just isnt personally referring the patient. Aslong as the patient can get a referral from another dr he doesnt HAVE to do anything he disagrees with.
A bit like vet surgeons, they qualify to do everything but nearly all of them believe de-clawing is cruel so refuse to do it. they are entitled to.I guess it doesnt mean they should never have qualified as they may be very good at their job.0 -

That is correct. What people are forgetting is that GP's are allowed to have beliefs too! As wishing has said, they are not preventing the patient from getting treatment, but they will not personally advocate it.Gone ... or have I?0
