9-year old debts - advice please!

Hi there,

With interest I have now been browsing these boards, in order to find an answer to my question, but have decided to post a new thread, as probably all situations are different.

Just under 9 years ago (beginning of '99) I engaged the help of the CAB to agree payments of several debts amounting to just over £7k. I have been - and still am - repaying these on a monthly basis and to three seperate Debt Collection Agencies - the total amounting to £45 per month.

Since agreeing the payments I have moved several times, and have not passed on my new address details to the Agencies, as I still very well remember the pressure they put me under all these years ago.

I now want to know, how much I still owe on the seperate debts. How do I best go about this, bearing in mind that I don't want to be forced into higher payments once they know my new address.

I've also seen posts regarding the CCA - since my debts have been sold off to DCAs (Moorcroft, Metrolpolitan and Mercer), would they need to be able to supply me with the CCA, even though I have made my monthly payments since 1999?

Any help and advice would be gratefully received!

You are legally entitled to an up to date statement from the dca's, although this would, of course, mean that you would have to give them your current address.
Have you spoken to CAB again?

  • Hiya and thanks for your quick reply!

No, I haven't been in touch with the CAB, as I said this all happened some 9 years ago, so I am not sure whether they'd be able to assist me in this? Would they be able to ask the DCA on my behalf or should I just bite the bullet? Could they ask me to go through this whole financial assessment malaki again? My income is indeed higher, but so are my outgoings....

    Thanks again,

I am sure that CAB would be able to talk to the dcas concerned on your behalf. They will also be able to advise you of your best options - it may well be that the balance, on these debts, is such that a full and final settlement offer could be made.
There have, even, been instances where 'debtors' have paid off more than the original debt, yet the 'dca' has conveniently forgotten to tell them.
Either way, you are entitled to know your balances, whether you 'bite the bullet' and do it yourself, or go through one of the debt counselling charities.
    Good luck.
