HELP:how do I get pee off cork-tiled floors?

Hi all
This is quite a disgusting one so I warn you!
I recently peeped round the back of our toilet to discover that my 6 year old son has quite merrily been peeing (for some time by the look of it!) not only all over the toilet seat but actually beyond it round the back of the toilet too!
We have a cork-tiled floor in the bathroom so you can imagine that the tiles round the back of the loo are now dark brown/black.
I tried scubbing with vinegar and water solution in a bid to clean it up and that got a tiny bit off but I'm at a loss as to what I could use that would get the rest off!
Please help!

The only remedy I would have is to ditch the cork - I would not have anything porous as a floor covering in the bathroom. Same as carpet in bathrooms

  • Thanks Sarah
But we can't afford at the moment to redo the bathroom floor.
    Any other suggestions?

How about a quick lick of clear varnish,it would seal in any odours already there and also making it an easy wipe clean surface for any more accidents,im sure you could pick up a tin for around a fiver in wilkinsons.
  • Hi Squiggles
    Thanks for replying.
The floor was already varnished before my 'little angel' started weeing everywhere!
The problem is not so much the odour as the black/brown staining of the cork tiles. I need to get this off before I can revarnish etc.

    Sorry i missunderstood your post.

found this searching on cork tiles:

They should be swept, can be vacuumed or cleaned with a damp mop using a liquid floor cleaner occasionally. Ideally they should be sealed with at least two coats of polyurethane varnish when used for flooring. Repairing cork tile flooring. The flooring can get damaged, badly stained or burnt. Use a coarse grade sand paper wrapped round a block to rub down the damaged area. Once the damage has been removed, use a fine grade sand paper to smooth the area. Once the area has been cleared of dust, re-seal with a floor sealer.

Or maybe you could varnish the tiles with a darker shade like dark oak or something to see if that would disguise the stain.
  • I have been thinking about this - odd i know, but how about you make a feature of it and get a small tin of blue gloss paint from wilkinsons or somewhere else cheap, and paint a 'splash' shape around the loo on the floor! Then it will be easier to clean too. A tip for getting little boys to aim - mine sit down to wee most of the time because they havent had a daddy to learn from (as in 'how to wee standing up') I can't actually show them how to do that! Or get a few rice crispies in a bowl and tell littlun to throw a few onto the side of the pan befpre a pee, and the game is to wash the rice crispies into the water. Ready...aim...fire;)
