Confirmation?

My daughter has this next week and it has just occured to me that it is a bit of a special occasion and what the convention is to mark it? She has her 1st holy communion later this year when i know a big fuss is made and they wear white dresses.

I am not a catholic, my husband is but he doesn't know.

It is at 7pm next thurs. So a funny time too? And who should we invite? My parents arent catholic but i guess it would be nice for them to come? What about other relatives? What is the done thing????

Do you not have your first holy communion first at about 7 and your confirmation at about 14? That is how it worked with me, Mine was pretty low key, just went out for dinner afterwards. I don't remember there being a big fuss, but then again I was a teenager!
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

When my DS & DD were confirmed (C of E) they had their first communion at the same service. We just invited grandparents (actually only one was alive) their godparents (all non relatives) and my sister and brother and their families. Brother didn;t bother coming. As it was a Sunday evening 6.30pm we had people back for cake and a drink afterwards.

Bit of a difference between Cof E and RC. We are C of E and confirmation has been relatively "low fuss" - mind you DS was confirmed on Easter Saturday in a late, longe service and we were all too shattered to do anything other than the coffee and biccy after! Did invite godparents though (grandparents couldn't make it).

One of my very old friends is a staunch catholic. Her DDs first communion was accompanied by quite a party, loads of rellies and friends etc and a few years later the same for confirmation. Obviously she has quite a large extended family too.

I guess what you do is up to you, but a "bit of knees up" and a cake is probably in order- enjoy! (Not to mention the pretty white frock!)

Well they are not doing the white dresses, and yes it is different in this parish in that they take the two sacraments in one year. More emphasis is put on the communion celebration-wise. It just seems weird to be inviting people back when it will be around 8.30 pm when we get home!

Is it traditional to give gifts?

Well it is in C of E - usually a bible or worship book. Depends a lot on the family though I think.

My daughter did her reconcilliation, confirmation and Communion in one year in that order. It seems to be the way it's done these days. We invited immediate family and Godparents and they came back to our house after for a cup of coffee and that was it. Some parents had a bit of a do after but most didn't.

Its differnt for each Diocise in RC as to whether you make your confirmation in mine we made our communions in primary school and confirmation in high school. Our first holy communions was a very big deal and everybody had a party after it but confirmation wasnt anything to special, I got some money for my confirmation but I got jewellery for my communion, crucifix and celtic crosses, stuff like that. It was the same for most of my friends to
