US Dollar rate query

  • The dollar looks to be as though it is weakening and we may get more per pound. Im going to NY in October and am keeping a daily watch on it.

What I want to know though is in the free Metro paper, the tourist exchange rate is listed today at $1.80/£1. So why is the Post Office offering $1.76 and Going Places $1.73? Are they ripping us off?

Tourist rate on teletext is around $1.76 (Travelex), inter-bank rate around $1.84. In t'olden days, you could get close to the inter-bank but then had to pay commission on top. When the high street moved to 'commission-free' exchange, they just built the commission into the rate... M&S and the PO seem to be consistently best on the high street.

I'm keeping an eye on the rate too as we go to the US a week today. It's 1.783 on M&S at the moment , having been 1.74 last week although it was 1.79 a couple of days ago , but i'm hoping it will go up a bit by the weekend when we will probably get our holiday money.

  • Ok, first question. I have a significant amount of US dollars that I would like to change back to sterling. When is the best time to do this? Am I best to leave it for another while and allow inflation to gnaw away at it? Completely confused...

If you are holding Dollars then it is best to continue to do so because if you have a $100 and the rate is say $2 = £1 then you would only get £50 back,
where as a rate of $1.50 = £1 would mean you got £75.

As Inflation is low both here and in the US this is not so much of a concern, if you are holding more than a few hundred dollars then it would be sensible to put them in a Dollar deposit account to get some interest. CitiBank run such an account.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • don't know if it's been covered eslewhere as I'm still new to MSE site but you get a better rate from Travelex if you buy online, than if you buy at the airport.
    I have a cunning plan!

It's worth considering using the old credit card in the USA. The exchange rate is often better than cash, plus cashback too.

  • Thank you for the advice on holding onto the dollars, although the dollar-holding account is something I will look into.......
