I'm not, and haven't, slated you. We all make our own decisions, and they are different for different people.

WE have great LLs. She pops round every so often, with plenty of warning and at a mutually convenient time. She doesn't inspect the place, just checks everything is OK, schedules repairs, etc. She arranged to have painting and floors re-done when we were on holiday, for example.

I didn't mean you, but other people seem to think I am some kind of silly little girl who doesn't understand anything for wanting to buy a house. Like I said you are very lucky to be in a nice home with a good landlord that you like, and that is a great position to be in. We are not in such a position!

I went to private schools from ages 4 to 18. My experience was great, I had a wonderful education.

OH went to a good comprehensive from 13 to 18, after going to a private, religious school before that.

Both OH and I got all As at A level, and went to the same university, where we met each other, and did post-grad qualifications as well.

My education was, over all, better than his. My grammar and general basic language training was more thorough, extra school activities more varied, and facilities such as the library far better.

My point is, I also had a wonderful education and would not have changed it for the world. I did amazing extra curricular stuff including horse riding, squash, piano, clarinet etc etc. I loved it. Our library was also very good and we had amazing facilities. I beleive I had a very good education and we didn't need to pay for it.

Just as people think I am wasting my money on a house, (as I could get it cheaper in 6 months) I also think it is wasting money to pay for private education when you can get it free. That is fine. My best friend went to Harrow and his parents and my parents lived next door to each other for 18 years. We had different educations, but each got a good experience and I don't think either missed out at all. He has also ended up with a good job (in fact he wants to be an actuary so will probably end up with a much much better job than me eventually, but that is down to him rather than his education!)

    Pobby that link doesn't work!
  • We have just bought a 4 bed today, well had an offer accepted. :D
Bought it for 30,000 less the asking price!so guess prices are going down! We don't have kids that live with us, but always have family to visit so like to have space. We decided that after our last house we would get a 4 bed because where we moved to is cheaper and why not. We are looking for a home and if prices go down further then hey ho, we're not going to sell straight away anyway .
I like to take one day at a time....but quite often several days attack me at once...

Well done on your house! Hope that it all goes well with the chain, we are lucky there are only 3 families in ours including us.

Do NOT get me started on private education. I am very highly educated to PhD level with a good job and I went to a comprehensive. My Father could afford to send us to private school but didn't, as my Mother is a teacher and agrees with state schooling. I got straight As and A*s at GCSE and 4 As at A level. I then went on to get a 1st class degree from a redbrick university and a PhD. It also provided me with a very rounded education.

It is not like I have not tried renting, I have done it for 7 years and I don't like it.

Police officers cannot be made redundant, and my partner is a career officer so is not going to leave. If he becomes ill he is retired on medical grounds and gets a pension. The likelihood of that happening AND me losing my job and being unable to get another is so small it isn't even worth thinking about.

If that is your argument then no one should ever buy. Apart from a couple consisting of 2 police officers I cannot think of a much more secure couple in terms of jobs. I cannot live my life thinking ooo we might lose our jobs next month so we had better not book that holiday.

I also decided to buy after all this news came out about crashes so it is not like I am trying to convince my self it is a good idea. I know what I want for my life, and life is too short to walk around with pound signs in your eyes.

You think I am stupid to buy a house, I think you are stupid to pay out for education we get free in this country. That is fine, neither is doing the other any harm.

    Whoa Lilly...

You are reading too much into what I said.

Also taking this personally. I never said I pay or paid for private education, for example but you have called me 'stupid' for paying for it.

This thread is not about LillyJ and whether or not she is right to buy a house.

    ...It's about Price Drops.

There is no right or wrong here but you seem to be intent on opposing the views of anyone who may not be in agreement with you.

Have a look at the Wikipedia entry for confirmation bias .

Anyway, if your are happy in what you are doing, why does it matter what anyone else thinks?

I wish you well in your new home,

Well it has been implied that I am stupid for buying a house, and I think it is stupid to pay for private education.

So we disagree what being irresponsible with money is.

Been looking in the New Forest area for the last couple of years and have seen some quite big gaps between the advertised price and the final sold price. In one case more recently the property was up for £1.2m and sold for £965k in Nov 2007.

This link shows a property with a guide price of £750k reduced from a previous guide price of £950k

We sold to rent last July because we couldn't find what we wanted at a price we could afford. We have never rented before but it has given us some breathing space and it is now looking like one day we might just be able to get what we wanted after all.
