Car tax rates

Hi
Can anyone tell me what the engine size is within the brackets for car insurance ? I have downloaded a sheet from Directgov but all it says is
Cars before 2001 (which mine is and my new one will be)
Not over 1549 120.00 per year
Over 1549 185.00 per year
At the moment I have a lovely old M reg speedy Golf but am entering a DMP and am looking to downgrade/swap/part exchange to a car with a smaller engine or a diesel as I dont travel far for work and its for school run/nursery run/uni run every day so I dont need a guzzling 1.8
Did I also mention that the car tax and insurance (cheapest I could find through all MSE links) add up to the value of the car each year
Anyone tell me what these CCs mean in real money equating to engine size
Cheers

Not sure what you mean because you have all the information in what you posted. So apologies if I state the obvious!
CC is the engine size, eg your current car is 1.8 so on your log book (V5) it probably says somethign like 1798cc they are never spot on which equates to a 1.8 and the higher tax band.
If you looked at a 1.1 or even a 1.4 it will be the lower £120 a year.
Apologies if I just stated the obvious!0 -
Cool
I just wondered what was the cut off for the cheaper tax eg was it 1.4 or would a 1.6 scrape in as well ??
Also
Is it worth buying a diesel car with a 1.8 engine will the insurance be cheaper if its the same year and value etc or if I wanted to make a real saving would I have to go for a model with a much smaller engine ?
Thanks

A 1.6 is above 1.549 so would be in the higher band.
Besides a 1.8 isn't gas guzzling0 -
I think they purposely did the brackets like that so that a 1.6 is classed as bigger size sure our Astra was!
Diesel these days with the prices seems a worrying option not sure about you but here we are over 10p difference. A diesel is only good on fuel economy if it has been running for over 10 mins under that especially in the older models you are looking at is equal or worse economy to that of a petrol.
Is this a second car? If it is how big is your parnters? If he has a good sized family car could you get away with the smallest car possible? Only you know the answers to those lol!0 -
insurance is a funny thing. a 1.8 in one model wit one insurance company may be cheaper to insure than a 1.8 same model with a slightly diffrent trim.
1.5 is the general cut of for a pre 2001 car for tax purposes and in general you will get cheaper insurance on a little 1.1 saxo or similar as well as better fuel consuption and lower car taxMF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
Hi all
This is our only family car at the moment, as I say it accounts for all travel for everyone in our family but it costs about 40.00 pw in petrol, I am sure a smaller car would cost less, I work 4 miles away and husband is at uni about a mile away same for school and nursery. It took a long time for both of us to become drivers and were not about to give up our car - we dont mind cutting back though
