I haven't seen this mentioned any where but when I was a student I joined the TA. The money was pretty good. Unfortunately I don't have the time anymore as I work shifts but thought others on here may find it interesting?

The downside is you could get send to some place where the locals try to kill you.

The likely hood of being called up as a reservist is slim though.

On a more sensible note, people should be aware that you can be called up for active service up to 10 years after you've left the TA (once you're fully trained). I do know 2 people that were called up 9 yrs and 6 months after leaving.

"Compulsory mobilisation involves the Reserve being called-out in any strength from very small (20) through to a maximum effort for General War. In February and March 2003 over 6,000 Reservists were called-out in support of Operation TELIC, the 2nd Gulf war. Prior to this small numbers of Reservists have been called-out in support of peace keeping and humanitarian operations in the area of the former Republic of Yugoslavia and for the "War Against Terrorism"."

Does this show that they have called up every serving TA member and have to also call up those whom have left nearly ten years ago.

Of does it show that the two people called up had skills no serving TA member has, nor has anyone whom has left the TA in the last nine years has?

It's simple, they will call up serving members first, as they know how fit they are and what their training/skills are. If they are reduced to calling some up who left 9.5 years ago, and may have forgotten their training and become really unfit, then they are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

When it comes to calling up, you only scrape the bottom of the barrel when you have called up the ones above the bottom of the barrel.

I don't know, I don't know what their function is/was in the TA.

However as my sisters fiance is in the Army, but is currently signed off and based on a TA base on "caretaker duties", i have no reason to doubt what he says.

I don't doubt he is right, but my point was it shows that you are more likely to get called up these days than at any other time.

Im currently in the TA, the chances of a compulsary mobilisation are more than slim, since there have been no cm's since 2005, of course as they tell you if you go to a TA centre to look in to it that could change at anytime.

Certainly I would imagine some specialist trades/cap badges are more likely to be called up than others but as a general rule at the moment the chances are very very slim.
