£2 Heating/lighting allowance?

Hello Everyone,

Im self employed and have heard a couple of times that you can claim £2 a week against your heating/lighting if you do some of your work from home. I cant find any info on this on HMRC website. Could you please tell me if they do class this as an expense and would i have to save all my fuel bills will my tax stuff? Also if this is the case do you just add it to your admin expenses on tax form.

Thanks for your help. Im sorry if this question has been asked before but i couldnnt find it.

    Hi,

Good news - it's up to a massive £3 a week from this tax year.

    Link to HMRC website.

  • How does one claim for this? Can it be done via the P87 under "Other Expenses"?

You just write a letter. But don't forget that your contract of employment must state that you are required to work from home. This allowance is not given if you just work from home for convenience.

There are more generous rules for self employed - have a look at HMRC's own published examples on the following link:-

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/bimmanual/BIM47825.htm

You'll see that you can claim a proportion of your home running costs, the proportion depending upon the space used and time spent.

Probably quite a complicated sum to do, but maybe well worth the effort.
