Adjusting a T Shirt

Advice please you good folks!

DS2 has a MASSIVE head (it's all the brains!) I bought him a t-shirt the other day which he loves and stupidly took the tags etc., off before I tried to put it on him; managed to get it over his head this morning but it took AGES to get it off tonight and nearly took his ears off with it.

What's the best way of adjusting it? He loves it so will be gutted if i Ebay it (and he never gets new togs, so this was a real treat for him). I've thought about a slit down either side (it's a V neck) or down the back ... has anyone done this before and can anyone give me advice ... I can do BASIC sewing but not much else ... have a stack of velcro, though.

  • Stick a small zip down the front, just needs to be a couple of inches
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

cut the back of the neck and put a popper on it? Like baby t-shirts?

Unpick/carefully cut the seam from neck-shoulder and sew some velcro along it, one on each bit you've unpicked. Depending on how much seam allowance there is you may be able to make it completely invisible.

Ooh, I feel so terribly nervous about doing this. My preferred option I think is the poppers down the back. But doesn't that mean I'm going to have to sew a seam then? And I don't think I can do that without bodging it totally.

I can cope with making a fancy dress costume but this requires skill and expertise.

First things first. I'm going to go out and buy some thread that really DOES match properly. I might take the T-shirt into the Home Ec dept at school tomorrow to see if there are any volunteers ...

Can you practice on an old T shirt first
  • My mum used to do this for DS when he was a baby since he had a misshaped head, poor little soul, due to the trauma of his birth (ouch). Anyway if you unpick the shoulder seam a couple of inches and pop a couple of poppers on the seam allowances (the bits turned under) your problems will be solved.

Mrs Flittersnoop, you make it sound so easy!

Thanks Sandy2, I am going to practise on an old T Shirt .. and I even found some poppers in my sewing basket yesterday!

  • Sorry :o hope I didn't sound patronising. It is fairly easy, honestly. Good idea to practise on one though if you haven't done it before. Let me know if you get into a pickle and I'll try to help.

    Good luck

Mrs F, you didn't sound patronising at all! I'm grateful for your advice and your kind offer. I am going to buy some matching thread tomorrow ... my only worry is that the seam allowances are literally just millimetres in width; so I thought about sewing on a flap of fabric on the inside seam to sew the bottom poppers onto?

In future I am buying T-shirt transfers to make groovy t-shirts for the boys, instead of buying them off the peg ... much less bother!
