Rental Credit Checks

Does anyone know if the Credit Checks they do for Rental properties are searches on the standard credit scoring agencies? Will multiple applications for rental places reduce your credit score?
My question is that there is a pretty good credit card deal with the IAM (Advanced Motorists) 0% on Balance Transfers & cash advances (with a 3% fee) for 12months. I don't really need it, but might be handy to have that cash readilly available if I needed it. My credit score should be not too bad, but I know that as soon as we move house it will go down a notch (I go from Excellent to Good on the smartsearch - and last time I got turned down for a loan, I was in the Good category, last July), so I need to apply before we move if I go for it, but likewise I don't want to try it if it will count against me for a new rental place.
Also we have noticed that lots of rental places keep coming back on the market after being Let, wonder if its people failing the credit checks. We are looking for 4 bed places around the £800 - £900 mark, so ...??
Does anybody know or advise? Thanks
