overseas debt

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum so please feel free to move it if need be.

Hi I was travelling around North America from Sept-Dec 2007.
I origianally stayed with family for the first week and then returned there for the final two days before flying home.

I left something at a hostel along the way, phoned the hostel up gave them my great uncles address and my debit card number for them to post it to his address before my return home.

This never came.

Now, 6 months later, I have received a letter that my great uncle has forwarded on to me from a debt collection company based in ontario, Canada.
This is for $15 addressed to me at my great uncles address stating the normal stuff that if this is not paid within 10 days of the issue date of this letter late fees will be incurred.

I first emailed the address on the invoice asking for original invoices as I wasn't sure what it was at this time.
I then thought it could only be the postage from the seattle hostel as I was using cash all the time along my travels.
This was the only thing I used my card for aside from ATM's.

I then realised and thought I may as well pay it even though I wasn't sure, just for peace of mind as it was such a nominal amount.

I then rang this company with the intention of paying it.
The guy began to take details and asked for my phone number.
I didn't want to give this out but he said he couldn't process anything without a phone number so I began to give him my mobile number.

I read out 079 and he said he needed a home phone number.
I wasn't prepared to give a landline and just said that this was my home number.

He tried typing it and said it wasn't accepting it and told me I had to ring a different number which was for the postage company that are claiming the debt.

I rang them, they had no clue, no reference number they just couldn't help me at all.
They advised me to ring them back... which I did and got through to voicemail asking for details of a card number and claim reference number.

I explained the situation on the voicemail, stated my claim number and left my mobile phone number.

I've heard nothing from them since.
This was about 2 weeks ago now.

I'd like to just forget about it and not feel that I have anything to worry about.
But can I?

I ask because I may want to return to Canada one day.
I don't want to go back in 20 years and flag up on a system for owing them a ridiculous amount of money which has multiplied over all of the charges that these companies like to add on.

I have just received a reply email to this. Which came around 2 weeks after I sent mine. That's a pretty poor response time isn't it?
    Is this company for real?

They have not requested any further payment but sent their invoice over to me again.
I have requested again the original invoices and would like to find out what it is for.
Is all advice still to just ignore this?
