Credit card help needed

Have just come off the phone with Barclaycard.

We have started to try and sort our finances out and I posted my SOA here recently. It has taken far longer than anticipated and as it was my son's birthday this weekend, we didn't get much further than we were at the end of the week.

Barclaycard phoned me last Thursday to ask for a token payment. We literally had no money in the account at that point as my husband didn't get paid until Friday, which I relayed to Barclaycard (us having had to borrow some cash from our neighbours just to be able to get food). The man I spoke to agreed that I could pay £10 once the salary had gone in.

OK, I didn't get the chance to phone back on Friday, as we were trying to sort out the financial paperwork with a view to having a proper figure we could stick to, to give to Barclaycard, and the weekend was madness due to his birthday being on the Sunday, but his going out with his Dad on the Saturday. Hope you follow that? Unfortunately, my medical condition makes concentration difficult, especially when I'm stressed.

They beat me to it and rang this morning and I said I would pay the £10, and was about to get my debit card out, when she said she was my debt manager and they could accept no less than £49 (or such figure, was too shocked to register). I said I'd agreed £10 on Thursday, but she said the man hadn't noted that (yeah, right) and she could not accept £10. I said that was the most I could let them have and she said it would have to be passed to the next stage of the system, which would involve a Default Notice.

So I'm here willing to pay £10, which they had agreed, and Barclaycard won't now accept it. What do I do?

And just for good measure I've just had a call from Club La Costa :rotfl:

Trying to keep my pecker up, but it ain't easy

    Hi TND

Your best bet is to call the inbound payment line and make the £10 payment. They will always pressure you to pay more but stick to your guns. The people you speak to are normally on commission so will say anything to try get more out of you, but at the end of the day you can’t pay what you don’t have.

Unfortunately they may issue a default notice if you have not kept to the terms of your agreement, this would will go onto your credit file for 6 years, but sometimes this can’t be avoided due to personal circumstances. If you’re now living a credit free lifestyle, hopefully this should not be much of a problem.

    Good luck

  • Hi CCCS Alan

    Thanks for that :T

The first time I tried I was cut off, but second time a different man took the payment.

What has happened is that I paid £100.00 last month, but the minimum payment this month is £292. I told them there was no way I was going to be able to pay that amount but could definitely say I could pay £10. What was upsetting me most this morning was that they weren't accepting that payment, so it would look as if I hadn't made any payment of any kind, which was not intended to be the case.

It's rather a daft question to ask (I feel I should know), but both my husband and I have credit cards with large debts, neither of which are being used or have been for some considerable time. Should we cancel these cards? Of course, we intend to pay off our indebtedness, but does cancelling them make any difference?

    Thanks again

  • i would imagine that you cant cancel a card until the balance is paid off of they would just request the full amount to be paid back.
if you are having difficulty paying these it really is worth talking to the c c c s they are a godsend
    good luck and stay positive
goal for 2014....i will manage money better ..must resist shopping..............:A
  • Thanks, I imagined that was probably the case, but wasn't sure.

We're just sorting out the final figures for various things and going to re-post our SOA here, as well as doing the CCCS Debt Remedy thing.
