incentive for filing online?

Hi all

Someone told me that if you file your tax return online there is a cash incentive. I doubt it frankly, and couldn't find any information on the HMRC SA website. Has anyone else heard this? Or is it just one of those stupid rumours?

Regards
Linda

No, there is no online filing incentive for self assessment tax returns, either individuals nor businesses.

There IS an online filing incentive for businesses that employ staff to submit their employers' annual returns (i.e. details of wages and PAYE/NIC deducted etc) which is designed to offset some of the additional costs that businesses will incur to do so, i.e. buying enhanced software capable of online filing, especially as it is about to become compulsory for businesses to electronically file their returns in relation to employees.

There is no such planned compulsion for self assessment tax returns, and free online filing software is widely available for individuals, so no online filing incentives as they aren't regarded as necessary.

Absolutely on the button ....... except
There is no such planned compulsion for self assessment tax returns

............ there's an element of 'persuasion' creeping in with the fairly significant shortening of the timeframe to file a paper Return wef from 2008?
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Yup the deadlines have changed, it used to be the case that you could submit a paper tax return up to 31 Jan before the £100 penalty would come into play although any tax return in after 31 Sept would not be guaranteed to be calculated in time for the payment in jan.

The new paper deadline is 31 October. YES thats right! thats the only deadline now.

any paper tax return in after this time will have a £100 penalty applied.

Not this year if you have paid all of the tax by Jan 31, 2009.
