I don't think that being sick would affect how you are taxed so the normal rules should apply (would be worth checking this with citizens advice though):-
Assuming that your affairs are quite simple you will first need to total all of your income for the year (i.e. all earnings, any taxable benefits and Bank/Building Society interest) etc. before tax.
Then simply deduct your personal allowance (£5225 for 2007-8).
The remainder is your taxable income. You then need to work out at what rate this is to be taxed:-
0 - £2,230 (10% rate)
£2,231 - £34,600 (20% rate)
Over £34,600 (40% rate)
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm
This gives you the tax you SHOULD have paid.
You then need to add up all tax ACTUALLY paid (not NI).
If you discover that you have paid more than what you calculated you owed in tax then there a form on the Inland Revenue web-site called an R40 intended to help you claim this back.

Hope that this helps you ...0 -
What about the leap year issue?? Does it make a difference
Earned £1242.16 Tax Code 522L
0% 5225.00 - £ 0.00
10% 2231.00 - £223.10
20% 4786.16 - £957.23
Tax Due = £1180.23
Tax Paid £1247.67
So am I owed £67.34 ??Help me to help you :santa2:0 -

the figure you give for your salary is incorrect
and for tax year 2007-8
10% tax is on the first 2230 and not the first 2231
and then the tax rate was 22% and not 20%0 -

If you think you might be owed a rebate its quite easy to put a claim in. I have done so recently and its quite straight forward.
You need to detail all money you received from April 1st 07 - April 1st 08. You mustn't leave any gaps at all in dates. Mind you being on sick for 9 months there won't be any gaps as I assume your sickness started before April?
So I assume your dates would be....(and for example)
April 1st 07- Jan 1st 08
Receiving sick pay at a rate of £XX.XX per week.
Jan 2nd 08 - Present day
Working, earning £XX.XX per week.
Then you need to include a covering letter stating you wish to see if you are entitled to a refund. You also need to include your P60 and state in covering letter you want this returning to you.
If you have a partner you don't include their money coming in, only your own personal earnings.
Failing that, if you aren't sure I'd recommend phoning the tax office. They are very helpful and can tell you everything you need to list.
HTH:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
