HELP - New TV

My friend wants a new TV and he is convinced he has to have a 50" screen and it has to be HD ready. My main question is what is 1080p and does it make a real difference to the television, whether it's an LCD or plasma?
Thanks in advance for any help.

1080 is a higher definition you can get (better HD picture)
I will try and dig some articles up, but basically LCD is great for smaller screens, but plasma are recommended for anything over 36".
It will depend on your preference - Plasma's are great these days - LCD vs Plasma are very close compared to how they used to be, ghosting, shadows ..etc.
For best Vlaue I can personally recommend Samsung - Great spec, screens made in same factory as 2 other 'big hitters', but a lot cheaper than say SONY.
Hope this helps a little.0 -
1080p is just good marketing, unless you are an avid film buff that has the latest hi def player then its not worth it.
always makes be laugh when they are trying to push 1080p when there is still a large majority of channels on cable/satellite that don't even broadcast in 16.9 never mind hi def lol

Very True Kev - unless your buying a BluRay player or PS3 - you won't notice any difference at all (even then is marginal!).
Go to www.amazon.co.uk and search for Samsung Plasma or LCD to get an idea of whats on offer. Read some reviews and when you like a model do another search to see if you can get it cheaper.
Don;t stress out too much, buyt try and get one with a resonable Contrast Ratio number (think Samsungs are nice and high at 15000:1) - this indicates how well it handles dark shades - something in shadoes, dark light .etc lower the number, the harder darker pcitures will be to make out.

At 50" you should go for Plasma.
Pioneer has the best Plasmas and then Panasonic.
Panasonic Plasmas are probably the most cost effective for the features you get and are the best selling on pricerunner.co.uk.
1080P doesn't make a massive difference like the previous posters have said but is more noticeable with the size of the screen. Hope that helps.
