Craft Ideas needed for baby blanket

I want to make a blanket for my youngest grandson, 3 months, using fabric etc. I am good at sewing and knitting and usually I am very creative but I can't think of many ideas to make it inviting and not just a baby blanket. I have ribbons to add tags around the edges and I plan to attatch a couple of teething links but there my ideas stop. I have a good source of fabrics flannel fleece satin etc, so that isn't the problem just the ideas I need.

Lift up flaps with applique animals under them
you could insert one of those little animal sounds that go baa
A pocket for the dummy ( if baby has one)
A matching blankie toy that velcros on or sits in a transparent pocket
Stitch a nursery rhyme applique or embroider the words
Use different fabrics for textures eg towelling, felt, leather, micro fibre, canvas, pvcPucker up and kiss it Whoville! - The Grinch:kiss:0 -

you could make a taggie type blanket, piece of material with different coloured fabric tags similar to the labels in the clothes with the sizes on. I keep meaning to do something like this as my 10 month old baby has had an obsession with labels since she was 3 weeks old!!!Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0

My dull but sensible contribution (I learned the hard way!) is to make sure it's machine washable, and ideally tumble-dryable.0
