Underpaid Wages

I have worked for a local County Council for 10 years. On Friday i received a phone call telling me that i have not been paid my Saturday enhancement pay for all of that time and that they will try to work out how much they owe me dating back to May 2005. Are they allowed to do this? I have worked every other Saturday for the past 10 years, should i not be entitled to back pay for that entire period? Any help, please?

Are they allowed to do this?

Depends on the T&C's of the 'enhancement'? It may not have been in place prior May 2005.

Talk to your HR / Union people - they're the only ones who will know.

Might be a good time to join a union if your not already in one as they could help you to negotiate?

The thing to do is ask them why they are only going back to May 2005. They will have a reason for this, might not be a good one or one you agree with, but you need to know what it is.

I suppose it's down to me to ask the question, but why did you work that long without getting paid what you are due?

If the council are anything like the government I can understand you saying you didn't know and just accepted what you were paid. But in the end you should check you are being paid the correct amount, no matter how hard it is to work out.

On the bright side, someone (eventually) spotted the mistake and is doing something about it.
